New Game Modes
We are excited to introduce a variety of new game modes to enhance your gameplay experience in Adrullan Online Adventures:
- Hardcore: Test your skills and bravery in this challenging mode where death is permanent.
- Self Found: Embrace the true spirit of adventuring by relying solely on items you find yourself, without trading or grouping.
- Solo Self Found: The ultimate test of self-reliance. Tackle the world of Adrullan entirely on your own, using only gear you acquire yourself.
- Group Self Found: Band together with a dedicated group of friends and take on the Self Found challenge as a team. You'll be permanently locked to your group from Level 1, able to trade and support each other, but no one else.
All of these modes can also be combined with Hardcore for an extra layer of intensity. Speak to the tavern keepers throughout Adrullan to select your game mode and begin your journey. Choose wisely, as your decision is permanent!

Stealth Mechanics Overhaul
Stealth mechanics have been significantly reworked to create a more immersive and challenging experience. Stealth detection is now influenced by factors such as distance, positioning (whether you're in front of or behind your target), and level differences. High-level NPCs are much more alert and difficult to sneak past. Remaining undetected now requires careful consideration of your approach angle and tactical positioning. The closer you are to your target and the more powerful they are, the harder it becomes to avoid detection. Mastering the art of stealth will require a keen eye for your surroundings and quick thinking on your feet.

Death Release Flow
With patch 0.10.12, we're introducing the next evolution of our death system. Instead of death instantly sending you to a loading screen, players will now remain in the game world in a downed state with limited control. You'll be presented with a timed pop-up offering the choice to release or await resurrection. This marks an important step in our ongoing death mechanics rollout, establishing the foundation for additional features in future updates.
When your character dies, you will:
- Remain in the game world and see your character's body
- Have access to a death release interface with a countdown timer
- Be able to receive resurrection from other players and return at that spot
- Respawn at your bind point if you choose to release
This system helps fulfill the next step in our death mechanics roadmap, where releasing will eventually include additional options such as the Nearest Dark Pact Mausoleum and Dungeon Binding. Please note this is an early implementation - we'll be enhancing the UI, animations, and visual effects in upcoming patches.

New Installer
In order to support a more streamlined experience including auto updating and selectable install locations, a new installer must be used. You can safely delete existing clients and patchers and will need to download the new installer from the dashboard. Now with auto-updating and proper permissions, we believe we are set moving forward.
Map Window
The map window has finally made an appearance. We believe it's important for the world of Adrullan to be intimidating and full of excitement. We believe modern navigation maps / gps-like mini-maps hinder the immersion and anticipation of discovery. That said, players need a frame of reference for finding friends and having a feel for the world. We yearn for the days of driving home with your newest RPG and pouring over the map, day-dreaming about what might be discovered over that next horizon. We hope our map system will provide the right balance. Simple abstract geographical fantasy map showing the cities and the "golden path" that connects them all. We'll soon be unlocking player pinning and hope to provide tools that empower players to discover and document the world on their own terms. This window is work in progress and the current art is simply an example and will be updated in the near future.

Summoner Class Changes
Bringing our classes more in alignment with our vision and grounded in the lore of Adrullan, Summoners have been adapted to better suit their identity as the prime elemental aspecters. Summoners no longer have a controllable, permanent pet mechanic. Instead, they utilize quick, temporary pets with different utility and damage types. These pets are further enhanced by the Elemental Aspect types (voxel or other entities such as Campfires) they stand around, amplifying their innate properties.
Guilds
The initial foundation for Guilds has been laid. Guilds will play a critical role in Adrullan, enabling cooperation and unlocking otherwise inaccessible content. Guilds can be managed via slash commands or through the Guild Window (default hotkey `G`). Context menus allow for the management of members and their roles. Guild Search and Creation interface is in development. In the meantime, a Guild Charter can be purchased from any General Merchant for 5pp.

Cleric Codex System Early Testing
Overview
Introducing the Codex system for the Cleric, this class defining feature is now in early testing.
*Note: The first codex may be obtained by speaking to Andrin Quillsmith at the Leont Cleric Guild when you are level 10.*

Lighting
With the deprecation of our lighting solution, hiddentree has taken the opportunity to customize our render pipeline. This allows us to utilize the Unity URP Lighting to it's full potential, while having an appealing light attenuation in a voxel environment. With this change we have moved to a Deferred rendering path. We can support lights with a wider range, more intensity, and add more dynamics. We will be tuning the lighting profiles across the world, however you should already see a massive difference in the quality of lighting throughout the world. More options will be coming to allow further balance of lighting features and performance in the near future.

Bind Wound
We have made some changes as we looks towards setting up Bind Wound for it's intended advancements and class aptitudes. To that end some major structural changes have occurred with the skill.
- Bind wound can only be started when both parties are not in combat (both the bandager and the person being bandaged)
- Instead of clicking a 'Bind Wound' ability, you now right click the bandage item in your inventory, or move the bandage item to your hotbar
- The bandage item dictates what percent HP the bandage will heal for and what the minimum bandage skill is
- The player's bandage skill determines the amount of time taken to bandage
We believe this will offer a nice balance / tradeoff between speed / efficiency / how many items are being used / etc and leaves lots of room open for milestones and future enhancements. For example the basic Cotton Bandage heals for 8% HP, takes and takes 10 seconds to complete. By leveling your bandage skill to 25, you can reduce this time to 5 seconds.

In order to make testing less cumbersome for the closed testers, the Alpha Corpse Summoner will now level any character up to the highest level of that class you have ever obtained on the account. Only basic melee / casting skills will be maxed out for the level.

QUEST Tag Removal
With this patch we are moving forward with our plan to remove the QUEST tag from item tooltips. This tag was intended to help indicate items that are utilized in quests, a great indication to a player to hang onto it! However, we like reuse of our items. Interesting RPG noise. Tons of Crafting resources. This caused a lot of problems where players were hanging on to items that weren't for their Race / Class, or to simple Crafting Reagents and Vendor Loot just due to it being used in some small repeatable quest. To that end, this tag was causing more frustration than assistance. We feel that our UI/UX and feedbacks systems are maturing in such a way that we can deliver information about item usage while remaining more in context and without causing ambiguities. We will continue to work to improve clarity and provide systems to help players feel a little more secure when making inventory decisions.
Crafting Failures
As we continue to refine and hone in on our crafting system, we have made the choice to omit failure. We believe the current system delivers a compelling and rewarding ark wherein you must complete the Recipe Research, gather the necessary materials, find an appropriate Crafting Station, prepare the components, and wait for results. Failure does more to sour that experience than enhance it. With that in mind, we have removed the ability to fail when crafting a recipe. Due to this, all Recipes have a hard minimum skill required and are no longer created on a curve. We will monitor and further consider the ramifications of the decisions in the grander scheme, addressing as needed.

Crafting Rewrite
Core crafting systems have been rewritten to harden systems and improve extensibility. The player facing results are few, but quite welcomed. You will now receive crafting experience updates as items are crafted instead of at the time of collection regardless of the status of your crafting station or even your login status (with the caveat of some crafting recipes being Active which requires you to remain at the station). Additionally the crafting window has gotten a pass improving quality and now including a recipe panel presenting the requirements and results in a clear understandable way. We are excited about this rewrite and the future additions we have planned for the crafting system with this refactor in place.

Death Mechanics: The Experience of Loss and the Loss of Experience
In patch 0.8.12, we're excited to introduce the next phase of our death mechanics plan, as outlined in the 0.8.1 patch notes. Building upon the Adventurer's Backpack system, we're implementing experience loss and level down mechanics to create a more immersive and consequential world in Adrullan Online Adventures.
Starting at level 10, players will lose experience points upon death, equivalent to 15% of the current level's experience requirement. This means that you can now lose your level if the experience loss brings you below the current level's threshold. By maintaining experience penalties and level loss, we aim to preserve the significance of content and exploration while discouraging zerg tactics.
To balance the impact of experience loss, we've introduced a corpse looting mechanic that allows you to recover half (7.5%) of the lost experience simply by retrieving your Inventory from your corpse. This ties in with our planned Resurrection spell improvements, where more classes will gain access to spells that function as a summon to corpse at lower levels. By looting your corpse after being resurrected, you'll be able to minimize the experience lost from death.
As mentioned in the 0.8.1 notes, Resurrection spells will tier up, with the highest tier recovering 100% of the remaining lost experience (the full 7.5%). This ensures that players have multiple options to mitigate the impact of death on their progression, even if they can't retrieve their corpse directly.
We're committed to continually enhancing the death mechanics in Adrullan Online Adventures. As outlined in our original design, you can look forward to additional tools and systems focused on corpse and item recovery in future updates, further streamlining the process and minimizing frustration while maintaining world integrity and social reliance.
Please note that these mechanics are in their earliest iterations and tie into several other systems. We fully expect to adjust all the details provided. Our aim is to strike a balance between meaningful consequences and player enjoyment, and we'll continue to refine these systems.

Design
Death
In Adrullan Online Adventures, death is an integral part of the gameplay experience, designed to balance risk and reward while minimizing frustration. The Adventurer's Backpack system aims to provide a fair and engaging death mechanic that encourages players to explore and take risks without fear of losing everything.
Upon death, players are presented with a window of time to choose their respawn location. They can either respawn at their temporary bind point (if one exists) or their permanent bind location (which serves as the default). Players retain all their equipped gear and a portion of their money, ensuring that they can immediately get back into the action without being severely penalized.
However, the contents of the player's inventory, which consists of 8 slots available to all characters, are dropped at the location of their death. This dropped inventory is represented by the player's corpse model, which can be dragged by other players, adding an element of risk and interaction to the death mechanic.
To mitigate the loss of experience points upon death, Adrullan Online Adventures features a robust resurrection system. All priests and some priest-adjacent classes gain access to resurrection spells, including those that can recover 0% of lost experience, at relatively low levels. This allows players to help each other recover from death without significant setbacks.
When a player successfully retrieves their dropped inventory from their corpse, they receive a 50% return of the experience points lost upon death. This percentage may increase through various skill milestones, potentially tied to the Bushcraft skill tree, reinforcing its survival skills aspects.
The Adventurer's Backpack death mechanic applies consistently across all levels, aiding in consistent comprehensible rules. However, to accommodate the needs of lower-level characters, who may have less attachment to their inventory items, the corpse timer for low-level characters may be reduced, as they are more likely to abandon.
By implementing the Adventurer's Backpack system, Adrullan Online Adventures strikes a balance between consequences and forgiveness, encouraging players to engage with the world while providing a safety net to minimize frustration. This death mechanic contributes to the overall vision of creating an immersive and engaging MMORPG experience that respects the player's time and effort.

Vertex Lighting
Previously, each voxel in Adrullan would apply it's lighting sample averaged across an entire Face. This could lead to areas of harsh "stepping" as the light level shifts. A classic technique to smooth the light fall-off is known as Vertex Lighting. Though this feature has been discussed for Adrullan Online Adventures since it's inception, with 7.1.8 we are finally introducing it. With this feature, each vertex of each voxel samples the lighting conditions around it and appropriately blends the lighting across the voxel face, greatly improving the visual fidelity of the game.

Weather Quality Setting
In patch 0.6.0 we introduced our Weather System. The particles used in this system are leveraging some of the newest tech available on the Unity engine. This allows us to display a massive number of particles incredibly efficient on modern desktop hardware. While we intend to continue work on optimizing the systems and better supporting older hardware, we recognize that in it's current state, the weather can cause significant performance impact. To that end we have prioritized the implementation of Weather Quality Settings. You will find the Weather Quality Dropdown in the Options [F8] Menu in the Video Tab. If you are experiencing slowdowns during weather events, we encourage you to reduce or turn off the weather. We've done what we can to maintain the feel despite the quality reduction, but we will continue working on improving performance across the board.

Server Conversion to C#
Backend development began an exploratory implementation that evolved into a full conversion of the server from Node JS to C#. This work has come quite a long ways and only a few major systems remain. At this time both server can be run interchangeably.
A New Perspective
In our last major update we implemented Local Character Awareness. This took the local representation of your character from being a floating pair of weapons to being a fully animated, fully visible, fully shadow casting entity. This is, of course, a fairly major undertaking. And though we will continue to iterate and improve, we are incredibly happy and proud of the results! Local Character Awareness was always a pre-requisite on the road to yet another major shift; Third Person. With this update you are now able to zoom (mousewheel) the camera to smoothly transition between 1st and 3rd person. Right Click will reorient the character to the camera. Holding Right Click will steer the character. Holding Left Click will allow for rotating around the character. Players will find several options regarding Movement Snap Back and other 3rd Person Preferences in the General Options [F8] menu.
This is a huge step in providing the player with more ways to interact with and explore Adrullan. We do wish to note however that Adrullan Online Adventures is designed in many respects as a "homey" experience. Warm packed inns. Claustrophic dungeons. This will remain and we find ourselves shifting perspectives frequently. We hope to retain what makes Adrullan Online Adventures feel truly immersive and palatable in First Person and believe our design will naturally encourage players to utilize First Person.
Osgul
As Osgul nears "completion" considerable efforts have gone into the design, prop-ing, lighting, and content. All but the Ogre Monk are now initially playable. We anticipate possible glitches given the sheer volume of new content and kindly request players to report any issues they encounter. Additionally, we'd appreciate any reports of graphical anomalies as numerous graphical elements are being introduced in this region.

Closed Alpha Tester Note: We have added the Directional Damage Indicator to help awareness when you are under attack. Gameplay

UI/Chat
- Pure melee classes UIs now hide the mana bar, spell bar, spellbook icon, and prevent you from opening a non-existent spellbook!

- If you have an item on your mouse and you click the UI, you will no longer get the drop item prompt in some cases
- Clicking on pet window will now target your pet
- Added screen effects for blindness, drunken and poisoned states

Systems
Engine
Since the last test, we moved from the 'Built In' to the 'Universal' rendering pipline in Unity. We also moved to the latest LTS.
We also implemented shader-based lighting system that allows an insane amount of (limited functionality) lights for a very low cost.
Rendering
The ECO team wrote their own voxel rendering system from scratch, instead of relying on a 3rd party asset. There is still lots of work to be done, but its a massive step for the project.
Pathing
The pathing system has also been written from scratch, instead of using a graph database (Neo4j). Moving this system in house will allow us to do all kinds of neat pathing depending on the type of block, etc.
Content
Classes
Warrior - The warrior has gone through major combat ability work and should be a lot more engaging to play.
Rogue - The rogue has been designed from the ground up and should be much more fun this time around.
Rogue - There are some shifty characters around who might be interested in hiring a rogue to do their dirty work.
Rogue - Check your trainer to see some new trap-related abilities.
Cleric - Added Gift of Glory to cleric spell vendor (Group Heal)
Necromancer - Raise Corpse: Necromancers may now raise corpses to use as servants for a duration.
Wizard - Wizards are mostly playable from 1-10, and have a couple starting quests.
General
The Mosstroopers have increased their presence in Leont Meadows...
Additional quests have been added to Game Warden Jesilda and Elder Aison Thorne within Greenwood Cover.
The druid rings in Pineyearn Forest have been made safer upon landing.
One of the entrances to the Leont sewers is a bit easier to 'fall' into.
In response to the bandit activity, the Leont Guards have increased their protection of the city.
Players stuck under the Leont graveyard will now find it easier to escape...
Bandages are now available on several vendors throughout the world. See your trainer to learn the ability.
